In 1971, Lincoln-Westmoreland Housing (LWH) opened the Lincoln- Westmoreland Apartments at 1730 7th Street, NW. The 10-story building offered 108 units to low-income households. That same year LWH also gave away land to WMATA for the construction of the Shaw Metro Station, greatly contributing to the development of the neighborhood.

LWH ensured that the property was well maintained and operated. After several decades, due to the usual wear and tear of any apartment building, the building required considerable renovations and improvements. In 2006, the board decided to undertake substantial improvements to ensure the ongoing viability of this affordable housing property. By 2008, the funding was secured and the $9,000,000 renovations were completed in 2009. The substantial renovation included comprehensive replacement of all building systems while residents remained in place.
