history of Lincoln westmoreland housing, Inc.
Lincoln-Westmoreland Housing (LWH) grew from a historic partnership between Lincoln Temple United Church of Christ and Westmoreland United Church of Christ in 1970 to address the issue of disappearing affordable housing in the Shaw neighborhood.
Our core mission is to meet housing needs and provide services to residents of our two apartment buildings and the surrounding community. In broadening our efforts, the Board of LWH chose the initiative of education as a means of supporting young scholars who seek to further their education beyond high school and make a positive impact in their personal lives and community. The Rob Agus Scholarship offers funding for academics, transportation, books, computer or other tools for the chosen programs.
To achieve this goal the LWH Board has created the Robert Agus Scholarship which is designed to encourage the success of the coming generation by reaching out to and offering financial support to motivated students who wish to continue their post high school studies or training. These scholarships will be open to residents of both Lincoln Westmoreland Apartments and Channing Phillips Homes.
ABOUT MR. ROBERT AGUS
The Rob Agus Scholarship is in memory of Rob Agus, a long time representative of the LWH Board who was committed to promoting affordable housing and community empowerment. Much of Rob’s career and dedication focused on improving the availability and renovation of affordable housing projects. His legacy is visible in DC’s Shaw neighborhood, Baltimore and Prince George’s County.
Rob believed that quality affordable housing is more than a human desire; it is a human right. Rob was instrumental in both enacting legislation that increased the availability of funds for housing, as well as the development and construction of hundreds of homes. Rob also envisioned a savings plan for housing residents. A plan was adopted where money saved by a resident is matched toward future post-secondary education for their children.
For Rob’s hard work and forethought, the LWH Board is pleased to create these scholarships in Rob’s name and honor. The Rob Agus Scholarship is designed to encourage the success of the coming generation by offering financial support to motivated students who wish to continue their post high school studies or training.
These scholarships will be open to residents of both Lincoln Westmoreland Apartments and Channing Phillips Homes.
